Overview¶
Chapter 23 exercises introduce advanced topics and help you choose a direction for continued learning. This chapter is different from the others — most exercises are exploratory rather than problem-solving. The "solutions" here are explanations of the concepts, guidance on the code examples, and advice on next steps.

There are no wrong answers in this chapter. The goal is to explore topics that interest you and build a plan for what to learn next. The code examples are starting points, not complete programs.
Warm-up Exercise Solutions¶
Exercise 1: Explore Web Development¶
The exercise introduces a minimal HTTP server using Python's built-in http.server module. This is not how you would build a real web application, but it shows the fundamental concept: a server listens for requests and sends responses.

What this demonstrates: HTTP is a request-response protocol. The server receives a GET request and sends back an HTML response with a 200 status code. Real web frameworks (Flask, Django, FastAPI) handle routing, templates, databases, and authentication on top of this foundation.

Exercise 2: Explore Data Science¶
The exercise implements basic statistics without external libraries to show the underlying math.

What this demonstrates: Statistics are just math on lists of numbers. Libraries like NumPy and Pandas make this faster and more convenient, but the concepts are the same.
Note on median: This implementation returns the upper middle value for even-length lists. The standard definition averages the two middle values. For a list of 10 items, the median is (data[4] + data[5]) / 2 = (50 + 60) / 2 = 55.0.

max(0, ...) and min(100, ...) clamp values to valid ranges without if statements. This is a common pattern in game development.

Exercise 5: Explore Async Programming¶

What this demonstrates: asyncio.gather() runs all three fetch_data() calls concurrently. The total time is approximately 2 seconds (the longest delay), not 4.5 seconds (the sum of all delays). This is the key benefit of async I/O.
async def defines a coroutine. await suspends the coroutine until the awaited operation completes, allowing other coroutines to run in the meantime.
When to use async: Async is most useful for I/O-bound tasks (network requests, file reads) where you spend most of your time waiting. For CPU-bound tasks (heavy computation), use multiprocessing instead.

@wraps(func) preserves the original function's name and docstring. Without it, slow_function.__name__ would be "wrapper" instead of "slow_function".
Decorator stacking: @timer is applied after @logger, so the execution order is: timer.wrapper → logger.wrapper → slow_function. The timer measures the total time including the logger's overhead.

Design patterns are solutions to recurring problems. They are not rules — use them when they make the code clearer, not just to use a pattern.

- Testing — at least basic pytest tests
- Documentation — a README explaining what it does and how to run it
- Error handling — graceful handling of bad input and missing files

The most important thing: finish it. A simple, complete project is more impressive than an ambitious, unfinished one.
